In 1894 two young nuns embraced a calling to serve, ultimately settling in Paola, Kansas, where they established a motherhouse for the Ursuline order. The next year Ursuline Academy opened its doors to young girls and soon expanded to a boarding high school, a tradition that Ursuline communities performed throughout Europe and the US. At its peak Ursuline Academy and College accepted young women from many states and countries as far away as South America. Journeys of Ursuline Academy and College presents a meticulous account of the seminal role the Sisters played for their attendees and for Paola and its culture. At the heart of the book are the memories and stories of countless alumni and Paola citizens whose lives were enriched by Ursuline and its community of nuns. The Miami County Historical and Genealogical Society has named its next project: a pictorial history of the Patterson Circus, which wintered in Paola, Kansas for decades. This detailed account of the circus and its effects on the citizens of Paola will be a photographic treasure.
